The Fragile X Association of Michigan offers peer support group meetings for families, caregivers, and individuals living with Fragile X syndrome. Our gatherings provide a safe, welcoming space to share experiences, learn from one another, and access resources.

Understanding Fragile X Syndrome
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and the leading known single-gene cause of autism. It affects both males and females, though males are typically more severely impacted.
Fragile X is caused by a mutation in the FMR1 gene on the X chromosome. This mutation prevents the body from making enough of a protein called FMRP, which is needed for normal brain development.
Common characteristics of Fragile X Syndrome
Not all are always present
- Intellectual disability ranging from mild to severe
- Developmental delays in speech and language
- Attention deficit and hyperactivity (ADHD)
- Anxiety and sensory processing challenges
- Social and behavioral difficulties
- Physical features such as a long face and large ears
